Episode 1001: Casey’s Crisis

Log Line

The vets prepare a black lab for lifesaving surgery as his distraught owner waits in anguish.  A muskox needs a tooth extracted and a stray cat arrives in critical condition, while vet students learn an unusual skill.

Synopsis

4th year vet students in the Teaching Hospital are coping with a stream of animal emergencies. Casey, a black lab, appears to be healthy but an ultrasound reveals a tumor the size of a cantaloupe that must be removed.  Casey’s owner, Shaun Young, is distraught as the vets prepare for surgery.  At the same time, a muskox arrives from a nearby ranch needing dental surgery and a stray cat hit by a car comes into the clinic in critical condition.  Meanwhile, vet student Tammi Orban and her classmates learn the fine art of rectal palpation on a herd of cows.

Episode 1002: From the Horse’s Mouth

Log Line

An old mare has nearly severed much of her tongue and the vets must perform a challenging surgery while she is both awake and standing up.  A Terrier has an innovative respiratory procedure and a puppy has swallowed its owner’s underwear.

Synopsis

A 23 year old former race horse named Ketepwa is wasting away.  She has severed a large part of her tongue and is losing weight rapidly.  Since it’s dangerous to put a horse this old under general anesthetic, Surgical Resident Dr. Ryan Shoemaker must cut off part of Ketepwa’s tongue while the horse is standing and only partially sedated. Elsewhere in the clinic, the surgical team performs an innovative new procedure on a Yorkshire Terrier with breathing problems.  Dr. Dennilyn Parker makes the rounds with a new group of students in the exotic pets rotation.  Two freshmen get to try their hands at cow handling, while the vet team deals with a puppy that has swallowed its owners underwear.

Episode 1003: Dos Chihuahuas

Log Line

An aggressive male Chihuahua proves to be a big problem while oral surgery on his sister gives the vet students a new challenge.  The student vets also struggle to save newborn calves and spay a young Saint Bernard.

Synopsis

Nico the Chihauhua has a severe problem with aggression and his owner Tobi Yandt suspects that her other Chihuahua, Noelle, has dental problems.  In the Small Animal Clinic, vet student Jackie Pierce performs her first dental surgery, removing most of Noelle’s rotten teeth while vet student Diane Cruickshank takes on Nico’s psycho behavior.  Two severely dehydrated calves are brought in and the vets struggle to pull them back from the brink of death.  A routine examination on some pet ferrets turns up a surprise and vet student Heather Connelly performs a spay operation on a large juvenile dog, which proves to be a bigger challenge than she anticipated.

Episode 1004: Merlin’s Malady

The deaf owner of a hearing service dog fears he has become blind and will be taken away. Meanwhile, a cow needs a caesarian section, a hairless rat has a puzzling skin ailment and an accident-prone lamb becomes a ward of the hospital.

Synopsis

Merlin is a hearing service dog and the long-time companion of his deaf owner, Helen Tonita.  Helen has brought Merlin to the clinic because she suspects his eyesight is failing.  Vet student Lana Bissett performs an initial assessment that points to cataracts as the problem.  But veterinary ophthalmologist Dr.Grahn discovers that Merlin is permanently blind, which has a dramatic emotional impact on the poodle’s owner.  Now Helen will have to be the dog’s eyes, while Merlin will be her ears.  In the Large Animal Clinic, a vet student must perform her first emergency caesarian section on a cow in distress.  An orphaned lamb with three broken legs becomes a ward of the College and a concerned owner must raise money to biopsy the ugly bumps that have appeared on her hairless albino pet rat.

Episode 1005: Foal in Distress

A four-day-old Arabian foal is being ravaged by infection and the vet team races against time to save its life.  A lynx must be subdued with an anesthetic blow dart and an orphaned lamb visits a pre-school.

Synopsis

Murray Popplewell notices his Arabian foal had swollen joints in her hind legs and brings her to the Teaching Hospital. Vet student Ulrike Helvoight assumes that the foal’s joints can be drained and it is treated with antibiotics.  But an antibody test reveals that the young horse is much more seriously ill than initially suspected. The owner is now faced with a difficult decision.  In the Small Animal Clinic, a surgical resident repairs torn ligaments on a young Rottweiler. A lynx arrives from the zoo and must be subdued with an anesthetic blow dart before its vasectomy surgery. Lambertus, the orphaned lamb with three broken legs, makes a visit to a pre-school.

Episode 1006: Rescuing Riza

Log Line

Coughing and having trouble breathing, a German Shepard is rushed to the clinic where the vets suspect a deadly fungal disease. A juvenile alpaca’s sight is restored, a champion horse has a foot injury, and Lambertus the lamb has his leg casts replaced.

Synopsis

Riza, a one-year-old German Shepard, has been rushed to the Teaching Hospital by his worried owner.  The dog is lethargic, coughing, and having difficulty breathing.  Small Animal Intern Dr. Sharon Finster puts the dog on oxygen, performs a blood gas test and takes samples.  The pathology lab confirms the presence of Blastomicosis, a deadly fungal disease, and Riza is put on medications.  Meanwhile, a juvenile alpaca comes in for cataract surgery and sees its mother for the very first time; a champion pulling horse needs surgery on an injured foot; and Lambertus, the orphan lamb, has his casts replaced.

Episode 1007: Sonic’s Colic  

Log Line

An ailing horse is rushed to the clinic for emergency abdominal surgery while the owners anxiously await its recovery.  A dog gets a new hip, while another has porcupine quills removed from its nose, and an orphan lamb finds a new home.

Synopsis

Sonic is in serious trouble and severe pain from colic, one of the major causes of death among horses.  Rushed to the Large Animal Clinic by his owner Marion Kopeck, he is quickly readied for abdominal surgery.  Faculty Surgeon Dr. Jeremy Bailey leads the team through this major operation, which requires the removal of some 20 feet of dead intestine from the horse.  Everyone anxiously watches and waits as the horse recovers during the critical period following surgery.  In the Small Animal Clinic, a total hip replacement surgery is performed on one dog while porcupine quills are removed from another’s nose. Lambertus, the orphan lamb, is adopted by a student and goes home with her to a farm.  

Episode 1008: Llama Leg

Log Line

The surgical team attempts to realign the leg of a young llama, which has been broken since birth. A thirsty cat may have diabetes, a dog comes in with swollen eyes and an iguana has unusual bumps on his face.

Synopsis

Fantasia is a two-week-old llama that has a broken hind leg.  Her hopeful owners have brought her to the clinic and the decision is made to go ahead with the surgery – a long complex procedure that will realign the femur so that Fantasia can use her leg again. After some initial problems putting a breathing tube down the llama’s long trachea, the surgical team must cut the leg bone and realign it using a jig.  Elsewhere, a thirsty cat that is losing weight is diagnosed with diabetes, an iguana has unusual bumps on his face, and a dog with swollen eyes appears to be suffering from an allergic reaction.

Episode 1009: Deadly Toxins

Log Line

A young Pug named Mei-Ling is seriously ill with a congenital liver problem that is poisoning her blood. A pet chinchilla gets needs dental work, a calf gets surgery for a hernia and the vets tend to an impaled horse.

Synopsis

Ultrasound tests reveal a young Pug named Mei-Ling is suffering from a congenital condition that could take her life because vessels that should bring blood to the liver are shunting it away.  As a result, Mei-Ling’s blood is not being filtered of deadly toxins.  Surgeons Dr. Kathy Linn and Dr. Lori MacDougall perform a complicated surgery to re-route Mei-Ling’s blood back through her liver. Elsewhere, a chinchilla needs dental work and a young calf needs surgery to fix a hernia. Out on field service, the vet team tends to a horse that has impaled itself in the chest.

Episode 1010: Stomach Flip

Log Line

Emergency surgery is performed on a cow that is unable to eat because one of her four stomachs is displaced.  A prized foal’s knee won’t heal, a dog appears to have heart problems, an aggressive cat has an infected wound, and a bull has an altercation with a porcupine.

Synopsis

Pam the dairy cow is in a lot of pain, enough to kill her.  One of her four stomachs twisted out of position when she recently gave birth to her calf.  The vet team needs to surgically deflate one of Pam’s stomachs in order to access the wayward one and reposition it.  The case is both challenging and nerve-wracking for student Evan Orchard; this is the first time he’s ever performed this surgery.  Down the hall, a prized foal arrives with a wounded knee that won’t heal; an old dog might be suffering from heart failure; a cat’s fighting ways have left it with a painful infection; and a bull has gotten a little too close to a porcupine.

Episode 1011: Horse Nose Job

The surgical team rebuilds the nose of a horse that was kicked in the face. Cataract surgery and new lenses save a young dog’s vision, a dog has a sewing needle stuck in an unusual place and the vets the vets try to determine whether an eagle has West Nile virus.

Synopsis

When Quake was just a colt, another horse kicked him in the face, crushing the bridge of his nose.  Initially the injury wasn’t a problem but now that Quake’s an adult, he’s having trouble breathing and tires easily.  Quake needs a nose job and that falls to Dr. Peter Fretz who must rebuild the horse’s nose, using metal plates and wire.  Meanwhile in the Small Animal Clinic, state-of-the-art cataract surgery saves a young dog’s vision, a tiny Shiatsu has swallowed a sewing needle and the vets suspect that a young golden eagle is infected with West Nile virus.

Episode 1012: Turn of the Screw

Log Line

A pet iguana has swallowed a screw and now it must be delicately removed. Meanwhile, vet students help birth piglets, check on a pregnant horse and try to help a constipated buffalo.

Synopsis

Vet student Jennifer Klaus adopted an abandoned pet iguana named Dante. In her radiology rotation, she was allowed to take an x-ray of her pet and discovered that Dante had swallowed a screw. An endoscope is used on the iguana in an effort to find the screw in his stomach or intestinal track, to no avail.  Finally, Dante is anesthetized for surgery and the screw is delicately removed. Meanwhile, vet students assist with a sterile birthing of piglets that keeps the newborns disease-free, check on a pregnant horse and meet a cowboy who hopes they can help his constipated buffalo.

Episode 1013: Bonnie’s Brain

The vet students are as busy as ever - treating an old dog with a brain tumor, a miniature horse unable to eat or drink, helping with a root canal on a ferret, and giving vaccinations to a throng of dogs and cats.

Synopsis

Bob Maskell is worried sick about his dog Bonnie, a 13-year-old Skye Terrier, that has recently started having seizures.  As the vet team runs diagnostic tests on the dog, it’s clear she’s suffering from a neurological problem.  But it’s not until Bonnie undergoes MRI (magnetic resonance imaging) that the sad truth is revealed: the old dog has a brain tumour and the vet team must determine if it’s operable or not. Elsewhere in the small animal clinic, a miniature horse has a pill lodged in its throat, a root canal is performed on a ferret with a broken tooth and the students give vaccinations to a throng of dogs and cats.

 Episode 2014: “Paunchy Pooch”

The vets must go to unusual lengths to remove bladder stones from an obese terrier. A pigmy hedgehog has a suspicious growth, kittens are sneezing and the team visits an alpaca ranch to perform pregnancy checks.

An obese Jack Russell terrier is suffering from bladder stones and the vets must go to unusual lengths to deal with the problem. An African pygmy hedgehog has a suspicious growth near its tail that must be removed, while a pair of sneezing kittens is diagnosed with a surprising ailment. The vets hit the road to perform pregnancy checks at an alpaca ranch.

 Episode 2015: “Twisted Owl”

Log Line

A large owl is found unable to fly and must be rehabilitated before it can be released back into the wild. The vets must deal with a pug that has eaten rat poison, a dog with a mass under its leg and a calf that can’t burp.

 Synopsis

A Great Horned owl is found in a farmer’s field mysteriously unable to fly. The vets must discover the source of the problem and rehabilitate the owl so that it can be released back into the wild. Meanwhile, a suspicious mass must be removed from a poodle cross.

Episode 2016: “Karma Chameleon”

A vet student treats her own pet chameleon, who is suffering from gout. A pug undergoes eye surgery to clear its vision, it’s lambing time in the barns and the students turn stallions into geldings.

A vet student participates in the treatment of her own pet chameleon, who is gravely ill with gout. A ewe gives birth to twin lambs in the barns, while the vet students visit a local horse ranch to learn the delicate art of castration.

Episode 2017:  “Champ”

Log Line

A dog is deliberately poisoned at a park and fights for its life in the teaching hospital. A racehorse has an unfortunate leg injury, a cat is accidentally crushed in a door and the vet students wrangle raptors at the zoo.

One Liner

The vets struggle to save the life of a poisoned dog, while a racehorse injures its leg and the students learn to handle wild birds.

 Synopsis

Someone has been deliberately poisoning animals with strychnine-laced hot dogs. A Golden Retriever named Champ is the latest victim and the vets are struggling to save the dog’s life in the intensive care unit. Elsewhere, a racehorse has seriously injured its knee and its racing career is now in jeopardy. Some vet students examine a cat that has been accidentally crushed in a door, while others make the rounds at a local zoo, handling herons and raptors.

The vets try to unravel the mystery of a poodle’s deteriorating condition. Two turtles are brought in for beak trims, a magnet is inserted into a cow that may have swallowed some metal, and open-heart surgery is performed on an orphan puppy.

 Synopsis

The surgeons perform open-heart surgery to correct the problem. When a cow at a local dairy farm swallows some metal, a vet student uses a magnet to attract the metal before it injures the cow’s organs.

 Episode 2019: “Mustang”

A champion bull is treated for digestive problems, a dachshund puppy has a malformed leg, an elderly cat develops kidney disease and the vets must treat a snake for a serious burn to its tail.

 Synopsis

Mustang, a valuable champion bull, is rushed to the teaching hospital after he collapses in pain. The vet students undertake the dangerous process of diagnosing the enormous animal’s digestive problems and get him back in shape for a major competition. A miniature dachshund puppy undergoes surgery to correct a deformed leg. A family must deal with the deteriorating health of their elderly cat, which is traced to its failing kidneys. A California King snake is brought in for treatment after it seriously burned its tail.

Synopsis

Cricket, a 12-year-old beagle, is rushed in to the emergency shift by his worried owners. The dog’s bloated stomach is the most visible sign of his illness. All the tests point to fatal liver disease and the distressed owners must consider euthanasia as an option. A horse with an infected molar has other problems: there is a suspicious mass behind the tooth that must be surgically removed. Pet rats are brought in for a checkup; one of them breathes noisily and appears to have an infection. A dog has a painful encounter with a porcupine and now the quills must be removed from his nose.

 Episode 2021: “Hunter”

The vets labor to save the life of a dog riddled with shotgun pellets, as a cat has trouble breathing, a mouse has a mysterious skin condition and an old mare has a strange swelling in her cheek.

 Synopsis

“Hunter” became the hunted when the dog was shot after straying from his family’s property.  The dog is so riddled with shotgun pellets, it will be a miracle if the veterinary team can save him. A cat is having trouble breathing, so vet student Patrick Garcia uses a scope to get an insider’s look into the cat’s throat and sinus. A twenty-year-old mare arrives at the large animal clinic with a strange swelling in her cheek. Resident Dr. Alana Shrubsole treats one of her tiniest patients ever - a spotted mouse with a mysterious skin condition that is destroying its ears.

 Episode 2022: “Tartar Cats”

Two fractious felines make life miserable for the vet team when they come in for dental work, as a Schnauzer is treated for a lung tumor, a rabbit has sneezing fits and a show mule has a strange growth on his ear.

 Synopsis

Two fractious felines make life miserable for the vet team when they try to clean tartar from the cats’ teeth. A Schnauzer heads into surgery with a fist-sized tumour in his lungs. A rabbit is suffering from sneezing fits and her owner worries she has a serious respiratory illness. Rusty, part of a team of show mules, has a strange growth on his ear that could at least, threaten his career and at worst, threaten his life.

Episode 2023: “Sumo”

A “wrinkle dog” named Sumo must undergo surgery to repair a serious defect in his heart, while a turtle has an eye infection, a cow has an udder infection, and a dog won’t stop chewing on the end of his tail.

 Synopsis

A Sharpei “wrinkle dog” named Sumo has a serious defect in his heart which could trigger cardiac arrest at any time, so he must undergo open heart surgery to repair the problem. A cow has such a nasty infection in her udder, she requires amputation of a teat. Exotics Resident Dr. Shrubsole treats a Red Eared Slider turtle with an eye infection. A dog won’t stop gnawing on the end of his tail, so the vet team amputates part of it, in the hope the dog will stop his destructive habit.

 Episode 2024: “Tess”

The vets unravel the mystery of a dog named Tess who is suffering from violent seizures, as a one-ton Clydesdale horse has problems with lameness, an amputee budgie is regurgitating frequently and a Basset Hound needs eye surgery.

 Synopsis

Student Jenny Civic is faced with one of her biggest cases…literally.  He’s a one-ton Clydesdale horse named Duke who’s lame in one leg.  One of the college’s receptionists brings in Spencer, her amputee budgie, who is regurgitating seeds frequently. Ophthalmologist Dr. Grahn uses one of his own inventions to save the eyesight of a Basset Hound.

 Episode 2025: “Electra”

A young horse with balance problems turns out to be a challenging case, as a guinea pig comes in with a badly swollen foot, a Golden Retriever has a tumor in its parathyroid gland and a dog undergoes radiation treatment for cancer.

 Synopsis

When a young horse with balance problems arrives at the clinic, it turns out to be a challenging case for student Tanya Fief. The vets suspect a fungal infection may be the source of the horse’s problems. Dr. Monique Mayer, one of the only veterinary radiation oncologists in Canada , attempts to treat a young dog who has developed cancer in her jaw. A black and white guinea pig named Oreo comes in for surgery on his badly swollen foot. A Golden Retriever has a suspect tumor in its parathyroid gland that needs to be removed.

 Episode 2026: “Bessie”

One of the clinic’s resident veterinarians is assigned to the case of a constipated cat with a potentially serious bowel obstruction. A young horse is rushed into emergency after she impaled herself in the groin with a metal shaft.
